I did some digging into the history of “conversational hypnosis” taught by Milton Erickson and I found something very interesting.

As it turns out, Erickson did a large contribution in the development of indirect, permissive hypnosis techniques.

In the early years, Erickson was using hypnosis in his practice of psychiatry, employing the traditional direct or authoritarian approach from the year 1920 to 1940.

As a young man, Erickson had very sharp sensory acuity which he developed even further with years of practice. Another one of his talent is his story telling skills. He has the ability to portray a story line vividly through his words.

Over the years, Erickson combined two of his natural talents together. He merged his ability to sense the slightest physical signs with his intuitive counseling and storytelling skills thus developing the early version of permissive or indirect hypnosis.

Some of Erickson patient did not know they were in a hypnosis session. He would sit there and have a casual conversion with them. The patient might leave wondering what had changed, only to realize later that their problem had been fixed.

Hypnotic Trance Through Conversation

In order for conversational hypnosis to work, a person has to be put into a trance. Erickson believed that everyone is capable of achieving trance.

What a hypnotist needs is the right skill and techniques to induce a trance state. Erickson honed his trance inducing skill daily from 1920 to 1980 and became a master at it.

Do you need to practice 60 years to acquire trance inducing skills? No you do not.

Luckily Erickson had documented everything he learnt from his years of practice. A student of hypnosis can read his teachings and develop the same level of skill Erickson once had.

The Art Of Hypnotizing Someone

Milton Erickson’s techniques are very effective for hypnotizing people who do not like to be told what to do. This technique is great to hypnotize someone who does not want to be hypnotized.

Some people are more inclined to following orders. They may respond best to the direct or authoritarian hypnosis approach.

The science of conversational hypnosis developed by Erickson is a great way to improve a person’s communication skill. In the modern world, the ability to get your message across is very important to become success.

Many world leaders and corporate figures know this and had acquired the ability to hypnotize people with their words as part of their communication skill. All of this is thanks to the work done by Milton Erickson more than 60 years ago.
